Obituary for Patricia Hill

Patricia Hill
Patricia Ann Hill was born on December 7, 1931 in Montreal, Quebec to her mother Mildred and her father Cyril. She was the first of three children to the Smiths. She had two younger brothers, Sonny and Gordy.

“Patsy Ann”, as she was nicknamed, enjoyed learning to knit and sew from her grandmother growing up, and she even made most of her own clothes through school. She had many fond memories of visiting Lake MacDonald in the summers with her family and dancing away to Big Band music.

Ann graduated from Westmount Senior High School in 1949, with ambitions to go into nursing, but she instead focused on business school and found work as a secretary which she would do for most of her working life.

Ann met Grant Garrow while at the cottage at Lake MacDonald when she was 14 years old. They later married on May 28, 1952 at a small Baptist church in Montreal. In 1953 her first son John was born, then Christopher Glen (born in 1956), and daughter Patricia (born in 1960) followed. The Garrow family moved down to Florida in 1973 to reside in “The Ranch” motel in Holly Hill.

Ann and Grant divorced some years later, and Ann remarried John Hill. At the time Ann was working at Daytona Beach Community College, and would later work at ACT as a secretary. Meanwhile her children were growing up, graduating, and finding jobs. Her daughter Trisha married Dennis Patrick and had Ann’s first grandchild, Jennifer in 1984. That year Ann lost John Hill in a battle with emphysema. Glen and his wife Carolyn later had her two other granddaughters, Laura (born 1988) and Heather (born 1990).

In 1986 Ann’s oldest son, John, was tragically taken from her. Her son, Glen, and his family moved closer to her in 1994, and she spent many weekends and school breaks taking her granddaughters to the beach, shopping, and dancing with them in the living room. She was a very active member of Alcoholics Anonymous and was a beloved and respected mentor to many. She stayed busy working at various jobs as a cashier and secretary, and later would take in sewing jobs at her home. She often went to movies and shows with friends and family in her later years, and enjoyed caring for her little dog Trixie.

Ann was a loving, small-but-mighty bundle of energy who made friends easily with just about everyone. She passed away quietly at her home on Sunday, April 23, 2017. She is survived by her brothers Gordy and Sonny, her son Glen, daughter Trisha, and granddaughters Jenny, Laura, and Heather. She will be sorely missed by all her family and friends.
